How this connects to college
In college, people are exposed to numerous influences that may be there for the first time, or the person is inclined to fall to these influences because of the environment they are in at that particular point in time. To avoid potentially ruining one's life, it is best to prepare. One of the times a person may begin to encounter these influences is in high school. Additionally, children develop and change a great amount in high school. This would support the idea that teenagers are more open to opinion changes during this time in their lives. They can explore and be curious all they want as long as they are taught early on to learn to control their urges and actions. In doing this, once those young adults graduate and head out to college, they know how to avoid bad situations and know when they should leave in their best interest.
On campuses, there are thousands of people with mostly open mindsets. Start a club or join one that suits you! Don't be afraid to get out there because there are probably a couple hundred people in the same mindset as yourself.
George Carling also is in the same mindset. In order to combat the newer generation's narcissism, he brings to attention that he believes that, “We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much. We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living and not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years” (George Carlin).
Additionally, it is also good to overcome the urge to believe they first thing we hear. This isn’t a skill anyone can Google or read in a book, there is no sugar coating, no condensed or full version. It is something developed over time. It takes finesse, but once this sill will open a new aspect to the world as a whole. Such is said by Tom Retterbush: “I’m not going to censor myself to comfort your ignorance” (Tom Retterbush).
